This course aims to provide you with an understanding of wool dyeing and knowledge on how and when wool is dyed. It also provides information on how the fibre is prepared for dyeing and evaluated after dyeing. It also covers the dyes and recipes used for pure wool and blends and the side effects of dyeing and associated environmental issues.

Welcome to the Woolmark Company Wool Science Technology and Design Education Program. The Woolmark Company is the research, development and marketing body for the Australian wool industry, supported by more than 60,000 Australian woolgrowers, who co-invest with the Australian government to support the activities carried out along the global wool supply chain
Module 1: The process of dyeing starts off this nine-module course by offering an overview of the processes involved in dyeing textile fibres more generally, before exploring the specific processes involved in dyeing wool and wool blend fibre, yarn and fabrics.
Module 2: The dyeing processes in wool explores the structure and chemistry of the wool fibre as it relates to the various stages in the wool dyeing process.
Module 3: Preparing wool for dyeing explains the methods used to prepare wool for dyeing, the particular issues that apply to bright colours (particularly bright blues) and the bleaching of wool (reasons for bleaching and the methods used).
Module 4: Selecting and applying wool dyes explores the selection and implications of a suitable dye type for a given purpose, the use of dye auxiliaries, and the methods and recipes used to apply dyes at various stages of the wool processing pipeline.
Module 5: Dyeing at various stages during wool processing, covers the preparation, processes and machinery used to dye wool at various stages throughout the wool processing chain (loose stock, top, yarn, fabric and garment). It also explores the advantages, disadvantages, challenges and quality control measures associated with each process.
Module 6: Dyeing wool blends reviews the reasons for blending wool with other fibres and the differences between the chemistry of commonly blended fibres (both synthetic and natural). The module also describes the impact of the different fibre chemistries on the blend dyeing process.
Module 7: The dyehouse laboratory explores the essential components of an efficient dyehouse and explains how the laboratory is the focus of all the control and development activities of the dyehouse.
Module 8: The side effects of dyeing investigates the many other changes in the fibre or fabric as a result of the dyeing operation in addition to imparting colour to the substrate.
Module 9: The environmental impacts associated with dyeing wool covers some of the environmental issues associated with the wool dyeing process, including the dyeing of blends, which includes its own challenges.
